The age just before schooling is a phase of the rapid development of your kid. Most times, it shall range from 3-5 years where they experience, emotional, social, and important cognitive skills. Cognitive skills for preschoolers is an important phase in a kid’s development cycle that a parent or instructor should follow and train keenly.

At this point, kids develop the ability to think, the thought of a kid is accessed through outlets such as symbols, language, and even false play that they do with other kids.

Memory

Preschoolers have a general sense of time, they can’t relate the normal days and months. It’s common for preschool kids to use today to refer to yesterday. At this point, their memory isn’t that strong and easily forgets over the long term. That’s children enjoy the same takes over and over again as if they were new every other session. 

Imitation 

Preschoolers imitate those around them behavior-wise. They shall do exactly what they see adults or peers doing. For instance, if you stick your tongue outside, they shall do the same. 

Develop a sense of numbers 

Kids at the preschool stage develop a sense of numbers as a cognitive skill. They can relate the order of numbers, quantities, and so on. At this stage, a kid learns and can give a count or understand numbers. 

Symbolic play  

Children at this stage tend to simulate the real world through symbolic play. They use prop objects to imitate adult life or general life around them. For instance, a kid shall hold a toy phone to his ear and pretend to call like it’s real. 

How Do Preschoolers Think? 

Preschoolers think a lot different than adults, if you’ve been beside a preschool kid you can attest to this. To understand how they think, Piaget explains it in his prelogical stage. In this stage which happens between 2-7, Piaget explains that children are impulsive rather than logical in their thinking. 

Kids at this stage lack the idea of reverse action, for instance, if a bone breaks, they don’t know whether it can heal. 

Preschool kids are egocentric and tend to concentrate on the world around them. Everything seems to boil down to the, for instance, kids might claim that everyone likes candy, or trees grow to cover them from the sun.  

Preschool children perceive objects to have human-like characteristics like when they figure their own trees talking. They tend to have poor classification abilities. For instance, a preschooler may ask for an orange and not a fruit.  

How to Promote Cognitive Skills for Preschoolers  

During this development time, preschoolers need instruction and care in order to nature and help them develop healthy cognitive skills. We compiled some effective tips below to get you doing it right. 

Do alphabet practices 

To help your kid master a letter, you can practice alphabets with them. Find simple sing-along songs that help recite the Alphabet. Find games and books for alphabet or even real object alphabet letters. 

Help your preschoolers learn numbers  

Just like the alphabet, numbers are important in the cognitive development of a kid. The easiest way here is to count objects or things around them. You call also count along with them, find a number of reciting books and games. 

Do shapes and colors  

Explore the environment around you with your child. Let them know and identify the colors of different objects and surfaces. Include other creative ways to make the process interesting and memorable to your kid.

Activities to Enhance Cognitive Skills for Preschoolers 

Not all activities enhance cognitive development in your kid. It is therefore good that you employ the right activities to nature that rapidly developing kid. Here are some of the activities we found to be effective.   

Memory matching activities 

These are simple card games that need your kids to memorize and prove by matching memories. Card games, therefore, help your kid to develop memorizing skills, logic, and order. There are a number of memory matching games to choose from. 

Let your kid stat with identifying single or multiple items, that let them memorize then challenge them to look for a matching item. That’s most memory-matching activities go. 

Solving puzzles  

Puzzles are a good way to help your child develop problem-solving skills. Most preschool puzzle games are problem-solution based, kids improve their logic and order. It can be a puzzle of fitting pieces, by the time they fit the missing piece, they can give simple solutions to the simple stuff.
